Advent Lessons & Carols

Advent Lessons & Carols

This service is an adaptation for the Advent season of the beloved Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which originated at Truro Cathedral on Christmas Eve, 1878, and was popularized by the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, through their annual Christmas Eve broadcasts.

In the service, nine scriptural lessons take us from Adam’s Fall, through the Prophets who foretold of the Messiah’s coming, and conclude with the Incarnation of Christ from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. Each lesson is then followed by carols and hymns that reflect on the reading.

This service will be followed by sticky toffee pudding.

Advent Lessons and Carols

Come and Join us for our annual Lessons & Carols event followed by a delightful reception on the lawn. The history of lessons and carols goes back to Cambridge, England, 1918 where some felt there was a need for more imaginative and creative worship in the church. This advent service traditionally contains nine lessons from scripture telling the story of salvation from the waiting of the first coming of the messiah, Jesus Christ, to the second coming for which we now wait.  The lessons are interspersed with beautiful choral anthems and advent congregational carols.
