A GriefShare support group is a safe, welcoming place where people understand the difficult emotions of grief. Through this 13-week group, you’ll discover what to expect in the days ahead and what’s “normal” in grief. Since there are no neat, orderly stages of grief, you’ll learn helpful ways of coping with grief, in all its unpredictability—and gain solid support each step of the way. This course will be offered on Monday afternoons and will begin January 26 and conclude April 27. To register, please contact Alice Sanderson at asanderson@stpetersfl.com !

Emily Yi is a lifelong artist and licensed clinical social worker, owning a private practice in Jacksonville that specializes with intense teens and their families. Her approach to art is very process-oriented. Layers build on layers, and with a few simple strokes, an image can be pulled out of what would otherwise look like chaos. Creating an interesting representation thatcaptures the essence of the person in mind will be the focus of our time together. It will be a beautiful time together, and you'll walk away feeling more aligned with your creator who made you to create!

Wednesday in Holy Week | Service of Tenebrae
Apr

6:30 PM18:30

Wednesday in Holy Week | Service of Tenebrae

Tenebrae (Latin for darkness or shadows) has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services (Matins and Lauds) of the last three days of Holy week, known as the Paschal Triduum. In medieval times Tenebrae came to be celebrated on the preceding evenings. It is a most beloved and hated liturgy because of the shadows of death that begin to cling to our Lord starting with this liturgy on the even of the Wednesday of Holy Week, sometimes called ‘Spy Wednesday’ in reference to the ambush of Jesus by Judas Iscariot.

Apart from the chant of the Lamentations (in which each verse is introduced by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet), the most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. Toward the end of the liturgy this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the sealing of the tomb by a great stone and all depart in silence. Interestingly, the candle stand is known as a hearse. The Tenebrae service recreates the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of Jesus and it is left unfinished, because the story isn’t over until the Feast of the Resurrection.

We will begin with a foot washing ceremony, followed by scripture readings and thought-provoking discussions that connect the first Passover to Christ as our everlasting Passover meal. Families need to sign up to contribute to the meal. Open to all ages and stages (babies, kids, youth, grandparents).

"So, could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matt 26:40)

Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus' time with His disciples in the Upper Room, where He instituted the Last Supper and commanded His disciples to love one another, showing them an example of servant-love by washing their feet. The word Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means command, as He commanded us both to remember His death through the Supper and to love one another with a self-giving love.

Good Friday Liturgy Noon
Apr
3
12:00 PM12:00

Good Friday Liturgy Noon

The Good Friday liturgy is the second part of the Triduum - the sacred three days. This most somber of all days is appropriately marked by fasting, abstinence, and penitence, leading us to focus on Jesus and the meaning of his cross. The church is darkened. The bare, stark appearance of the church serves as a reminder of the solemnity and sorrow of this day.

The Lord of Life was rejected, mocked, scourged, and then put to death on the cross. The faithful are reminded of the role which their own sin played in this suffering and agony, as Christ took all sin upon himself, in obedience to his Father’s will. By the cross we are redeemed, set free from bondage to sin and death. The cross is a sign of God’s never-ending love for us. It is a sign of life, in the midst of death.

Worship on Sunday is an essential part of the Christian life, but sometimes aspects of the worship service can feel mysterious or even confusing. Why do people cross themselves at certain points in the liturgy? Why is the Bible processed down the aisle for the Gospel reading? What are the priests doing at the altar? If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions, you are not alone! This class is designed to help you understand what the Church does on Sunday, why it is so significant and how you can meaningfully participate in worship. The class, in four sessions led by Fr. Michael Petty and Andrew Beluk,, will explain both the deeper theology and moment-by-moment happenings of a Sunday worship service.

There will be opportunities to learn in large group sessions and reflect in smaller group sessions.

The retreat will begin the evening of Friday, February 20 with check-in and heavy hors d’oeuvres from 6-6:45pm, followed by Session 1 with Sara from 7-8pm. Saturday, February 21 will be 8am-1:30pm and will include a hot breakfast, snacks, lunch, worship, two small group sessions and two sessions with Sara.
