Foundations 1: The Creed

            Led by Fr. Jonathan Kanary

This course explores the heart of our faith through the lens of the Apostle’s Creed. Guided by To Be a Christian: An Anglican Catechism, we will discuss the origins and role of Scripture and the basic principles of Christian belief. Participants will learn more about who God is and what God has done for our salvation, as well as what it looks like to bear witness to this story in our own lives. This class is required for confirmation, and it is a great starting place for anyone who wants to grow in faith and knowledge of our Triune God. (Note: this class will be offered as a series of four Saturday-morning intensives from 9am-noon on Sept 12, Oct 10, Nov 7, and Dec 5. Participants are expected to attend all four sessions.)

“Glittering Vices”: How to Triumph over Temptation

            Led by Andrew Beluk

Christian tradition identifies “seven deadly sins,” not as the worst sins a person can commit, but as roots from which other sins grow: disordered desires that shape character over time. This discussion-based class will use Rebecca DeYoung’s book Glittering Vices to guide our conversation as we consider each sin in turn. What good thing does it counterfeit? How does it take hold in ordinary life? What practices has the tradition offered as its remedy? The aim is not guilt but self-knowledge and spiritual healing, pursued honestly and in the company of others.

The Sermon on the Mount

            Led by Fr. Jeff Trostle

Matthew 5–7 contains the longest sustained teaching of Jesus in the Gospels. These blessings, commands, and warnings have shaped Christian moral imagination for two millennia, yet they resist easy application. This class moves through the Sermon section by section, attending to its first-century setting and to the questions it raises for us. Rather than treating the text as a set of impossible ideals or as general moral advice, we will read it as a portrait of life within the kingdom Jesus proclaimed. All are welcome; no prior study required.
