Cultivating a Forgiving Spirit - What does it mean?
by Lucille Palmer
The subject for my blog this week is Cultivating a Forgiving Spirit. I am quick to acknowledge that blog writing is a bit intimidating to me because I have never done it before. So, I am offering my blogging (blunders and all) to my Lord and Savior each time I sit down to write.
To me cultivating a forgiving spirit means more than demonstrating a loving spirit towards another who has harmed me. It also means setting aside my own selfishness, pride, insecurities and pettiness so that I can make room for God’s grace which He gives so freely to all of us.
When I think about cultivating a forgiving spirit in this way, it means that I am completely open to God’s grace under all circumstances. I am open to God’s power living in me. I am holding myself accountable for my unkind thoughts, envy, covetousness, judgments andcriticisms of others and repeatedly thanking God for loving me, a sinner, who also is in need of God’s forgiveness. Cultivating a forgiving spirit means modeling God’s gift of grace and love which will give me the strength and courage to grow and nurture a spirit of forgiveness and expect nothing in return from others.
I can only cultivate a forgiving spirit through my faith in Christ and by accepting His grace and love every day.
Let us, then, feel very sure that when we can come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we can receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it.
